The Essential Organic Mattress is the perfect introduction to natural, non-toxic sleep.

Thoughtfully designed for comfort and durability, the Essential is made with 4" of firm organic latex and 4" of medium organic latex for a total height of 8". This dual-layer construction allows you to flip the layers to adjust the feel to either Medium-Firm or Firm on top.

While it does not offer the full range of customization available in our other models, the Essential provides consistent firm to medium-firm support, making it a reliable choice for anyone seeking a high-quality, long-lasting organic mattress.

For best performance, your Obasan mattress should be placed on a firm, supportive foundation with built-in breathability, such as wooden slats or a ventilated platform base. See our Obasan Foundations.

Slatted Base/Foundation

We recommend a slatted mattress base or foundation with:

  • Metal or wooden slats spaced no more than 3” apart
  • Slats that are  2” - 6” wide
  • A centre support bar running vertically down the middle of the frame
  • One or more centre legs to further support the centre beam. This becomes especially helpful for larger mattresses (Queen, King, or California King).

Solid Wood Base/Foundation

If your foundation has a solid wood surface, it must include ventilation for airflow. We recommend: 

  • Vent holes approximately 1” in diameter
  • Spaced about 12-15” apart

 ensure it has holes or vents for recommended breathability. We typically recommend holes of about 1" diameter every 12-15" apart.

  • Twin (39” x 75”)

  • Flip top layers every 6 months to extend the lifespan of your mattress. Alternate the rotation each time: first rotation head to toe, next rotation left to right, and continue alternating.
  • Removable mattress cover can be aired out seasonally.
  • Do not wash any components of your mattress. If necessary, spot clean with a mild soap and very little water. Air dry.
  • Do not place mattress layers in direct sunlight or direct heat source.
  • In order for your mattress to breathe properly, we recommend placing your mattress on an Obasan Foundation or an equivalent solid wood slat base. If you’re unsure if your foundation will work, one of our Sleep Specialists would be happy to help you.

Unlike memory foam, organic latex is a natural material, while memory foam is synthetic. Organic latex is breathable, durable, and provides resilient, pressure-relieving support. It’s also made without petroleum-based materials, adhesives, or chemical flame retardants, resulting in zero off-gassing and a cleaner sleep environment. That’s why all Obasan mattresses and bedding are made using organic materials.

The Essential Mattress is handcrafted with GOLS-certified organic latex and breathable natural materials, designed to promote airflow and help keep your sleep surface cool and dry throughout the night. For added temperature regulation, you can pair it with one of our Organic Wool Mattress Toppers. This removable topper combines organic latex with GOTS-certified organic wool, a material with natural temperature-regulating properties.
