Why We Use Organic Mattress & Bedding Materials

A Better Way to Build Sleep, From the Ground Up

At Obasan, choosing organic materials was not a trend or a marketing decision. It was a natural evolution driven by one simple question: what should we be sleeping on for nearly a third of our lives?

As we learned more about how mattresses are made and how closely they interact with the body, it became clear that materials matter. Not just for comfort, but for health, durability, and the impact we leave behind. That belief continues to shape every mattress we make.

Why We Chose Organic

Our journey toward organic materials began with listening. Listening to people who struggled with allergies, sensitivities, and disrupted sleep. Listening to how synthetic foams, chemical flame retardants, and off-gassing affected their rest and well-being.

Organic materials offered a better answer. By returning to time-tested fibers like natural latex, organic cotton, and organic wool, we were able to create mattresses that support the body naturally, breathe better, and perform without relying on harmful additives.

Choosing organic also means choosing transparency. Certified organic materials are held to rigorous standards under GOTS and GOLS that protect both the sleeper and the people who grow and process them. It allows us to know exactly what goes into your mattress, and just as importantly, what stays out.

The Benefits of Organic Materials

Healthier Sleep Environment

Organic materials are free from synthetic foams, chemical flame retardants, and unnecessary treatments. This helps create a cleaner sleep surface with no off-gassing, making them ideal for people with allergies, sensitivities, or anyone seeking a more natural sleep environment.

Better Breathability and Comfort

Organic fibers naturally regulate temperature and moisture far better than conventional materials. Organic latex responds to your body while maintaining airflow, organic cotton stays soft and breathable, and organic wool naturally wicks moisture to help keep your sleep comfortable year-round.

Long-Lasting Performance

Organic materials are resilient by nature. High-quality organic latex retains its shape and support for years, while wool and cotton maintain their structure without breaking down prematurely. This durability allows us to build mattresses that can evolve with you instead of needing to be replaced.

Responsible by Design

Organic certification protects ecosystems, conserves water, and limits exposure to harmful chemicals for farmers and workers. It also aligns with our belief that quality sleep should never come at the expense of people or the planet.

Where Our Materials Come From

We source organic materials globally, partnering with growers and makers who share our values of care, ethics, and craftsmanship. These long-standing relationships allow us to ensure quality at every stage of production.

Organic Cotton | Peru

Our organic cotton comes from the Cañete Valley in Peru, a region known for its long-staple fibers and centuries-old cotton-growing traditions. Grown and processed under strict organic standards, this cotton is breathable, soft, and durable, making it ideal for mattress covers and encasements.

Organic Wool | Patagonia, Argentina

We source organic wool from Corriedale sheep in Patagonia, where the land has never been exposed to modern agricultural chemicals. The sheep roam freely, producing wool that is resilient, insulating, and naturally flame resistant without chemical treatments.

Organic Latex | Sri Lanka

Our organic latex is harvested from rubber trees in Sri Lanka, where sap is tapped by hand and processed the same day using the Dunlop method. This preserves the material’s natural elasticity and durability without the need for stabilizing chemicals.

Handcrafted In Canada

All Obasan mattresses are handcrafted in Canada, where our skilled team assembles each mattress layer by layer. By keeping manufacturing close to home, we maintain control over quality, reduce unnecessary transport, and support Canadian craftsmanship.
