Caring for your organic bedding doesn't have to be complicated. With the right approach, natural materials like organic cotton, wool, and latex can stay fresh, comfortable, and long-lasting for years to come.
This guide walks you through how to care for your bedding, including how to wash sheets, maintain pillows, and properly care for duvets and other bedroom essentials.
How Often Should You Wash Organic Bedding?
Most organic bedding can be refreshed by simply airing it outdoors in the shade. Materials like wool, cotton, and latex are naturally breathable and resistant to dust mites, bacteria, and moisture buildup. This means frequent washing is often unnecessary, unlike with synthetic alternatives.
- Sheets & pillowcases: Wash every 1–2 weeks
- Pillows & duvets: Air out seasonally
- Wool products: Refresh by airing rather than washing
Understanding Organic Bedding Materials
Proper care starts with understanding the materials your bedding is made from:
Organic Wool
Organic wool is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking. It can absorb moisture and release it back into the air without feeling damp, making it ideal for temperature regulation.
Because of these natural properties:
- Wool should not be washed with soap and water
- Washing can damage the fibers by permanently altering its natural structure, causing shrinkage and loss of performance
- Instead, air wool products outdoors to refresh and restore loft
Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is soft, breathable, and durable, but unlike heavily treated or synthetic fabrics, it hasn't been chemically processed to resist wear.
To maintain its quality:
- Wash gently using mild detergent
- Avoid high heat, which can weaken fibers over time
- Skip harsh chemicals like chlorine bleach
With proper care, organic cotton becomes softer over time while maintaining its strength.
Organic Latex
Organic latex is a highly breathable and resilient material that provides long-lasting support.
To protect its structure:
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or heat, which can cause breakdown
- Wash only when necessary (depending on product type)
- Always allow latex to air dry completely
Latex's open structure promotes airflow, helping regulate temperature and prevent moisture buildup.
How to Care for Pillows
Our organic pillows are made with a range of natural materials, including organic cotton, wool, latex, and Hutterite down—sometimes in hybrid combinations.
All pillows include a removable protector:
- Machine wash cold
- Hang to dry to prevent shrinkage
- Ensure fully dry before placing back on the pillow
Using a breathable pillowcase will help extend the life of your pillow and keep it clean.
Adjusting Your Loft
Pillow loft refers to the height and support level of your pillow.
Many of our pillows have adjustable loft:
- Unzip the inner core to add or remove filling
- Adjust gradually to find your ideal comfort level
Tip: Adjust over a sink (with the drain plugged) or outdoors to manage loose filling.
Note: Loft cannot be adjusted on contour, pregnancy, or toddler pillows.
